Foreign workers can only legally enter and stay in Vietnam when they are granted a visa by a competent authority. Therefore, in case the visa expires, foreign workers also need to extend their visas to avoid violating Vietnamese law.

What is a Visa? Basic types of visas 


Visa is a document issued by a competent authority of Vietnam, allowing foreigners to enter Vietnam.

The basic types of visas include:

  • Visas granted to foreign workers (abv: LD1, LD2), valid for no more than 02 years.

  • Visas granted to foreign investors (abv: DT1, DT2, DT3, DT4), with a term of no more than 12 months to no more than 05 years.

  • Visa granted to foreign lawyers working in Vietnam (abv: LS), valid for no more than 05 years.

  • Visas granted to foreigners working with enterprises and entering Vietnam to offer services (abv: DN1, DN2) are valid for no more than 12 months.

  • Visa granted to foreigners to study (abv: DH) is valid for no more than 12 months.

  • Visa granted to tourists (abv: DL) is valid for no more than 03 months.

Conditions for foreign workers to be issued a new visa


Foreign workers who want to be issued a new visa must meet the following conditions:

  • Having a valid passport or international travel document.

  • Being invited or guaranteed by agencies, organizations and individuals in Vietnam.

  • Not in the cases that have not been allowed to enter the country, including:

    • Being ineligible for entry.

    • Children under 14 years old who are not accompanied by their father, mother, guardian or authorized person.

    • Forging papers, making false declarations in order to be granted valid documents on entry, exit and residence.

    • Persons with mental illnesses or infectious diseases endangering public health.

    • Being expelled from Vietnam for less than 03 years from the effective date of the decision on expulsion.

    • Being forced to exit from Vietnam within 06 months from the effective date of the decision on forced exit.

    • For disease prevention and control reasons.

    • For natural disaster reasons.

    • For reasons of national defense, security, social order and safety.

  • The following cases when applying for a visa must have documents proving the purpose of entry:

    • Foreigners entering to invest must have documents proving their investment in Vietnam in accordance with the Law on Investment.

    • Foreigners entering to practice law in Vietnam must have a license to practice law in accordance with the Law on Lawyers.

    • Foreigners entering to work must have a work permit in accordance with the regulations of the Labor Code.

    • Foreigners entering to study must have a written acceptance from the Vietnamese school or educational institution.

Conditions for visa extension

Foreigners who want to extend Vietnamese visa need to meet following conditions:

  • Visas are allowed to be extended such as tourism, business, visiting relatives, symbols: DN, LD, DT, DL, TT.

  • Foreigners must be allowed to extend their Visa according to regulations.

  • Passport is still valid.

  • Not committing a crime during their stay in Vietnam.

  • Having confirmation of temporary residence in Vietnam.

Visa extension procedures for foreign workers


In fact, the visa extension procedure is actually the procedure to request the competent authority to issue a new visa. Therefore, the visa extension procedure is the visa renewal procedure, which is carried out as follows:

  • Prepare documents to apply for visa extension, including:

    • Original valid passport.

    • The application form for visa extension according to the form (NA5) (Note: must have "seal and signature" of the legal representative or authorized representative of the enterprise).

    • 01 new photo taken in size 4x6cm.

    • Valid work permit or written confirmation of work permit exemption.

    • A certified copy of the license or decision of a competent authority on the establishment of the organization.

    • Official seal sample certificate of the company.

    • Certificate of temporary residence of the local police where the foreigner temporarily resides in Vietnam.

    • Letter of introduction for people who come for Vietnam visa extension procedures from companies employing foreign workers.

  • Submit the application.

  • Competent agencies consider and grant visa within 5 working days from the date of receipt of complete dossiers.

  • Pay the extension fee and get a visa.
